What Is Frontloading?

Frontloading is the highly intentional process in which a small team of leaders craft an organization’s DNA -- its story, structure, strategy, and culture -- and prepare for it to be distributed across the country in the form of a mass movement organization.

Check out our Frontloading Page for more information!

What Was the Cohort?

Through the work of Momentum movements, we have seen that frontloaded projects can have profound impacts on the organizing and political landscape. Frontloaded movements are innovating their organizing practices, and those new organizing practices change what is politically possible, from Cosecha winning driver's licenses in New Jersey to Sunrise organizing the whole climate ecology into a Green New Deal. Because of this, Momentum has made a strategic decision to focus the majority of our capacity into creating new frontloading movement organizations.

This past year we took a massive step forward in our goal to incubate movements and crafted a yearlong program to support a cohort of leaders in developing new movement organizations capable of meeting the massive political task of winning material victories while engaging a majority of the public. Over the last year we provided:

  • Direct coaching with former frontloaders

  • A Momentum 101 Training

  • 4 week-long trainings

  • 7 webinars

  • Finance & Budgeting: Operations Set Up

  • $15,000 of seed money

With new groups set to launch in 2022, we’re ready to continue shaping the social and political landscape for years to come.

Testimonials

“In a country where formal organizing training is incredibly hard to come by, the Momentum cohort has deeply rooted me in the craft of organizing and has allowed me to see myself as an agent of change, capable of innovating on those who have come before us.  It has given us the design and facilitation skills and tools we need to frontload through a global pandemic and has provided us with the shared language we need to dig deeper into strategic debates. Perhaps most importantly, it's connected us to an entire community of incredible movement leaders and innovators whom we can call upon for advice, shared learnings, and collective grieving. To be brought into this community has been one of the most incredible gifts.”

 -Emma Jackson

“Being part of Momentum’s frontloading cohort helped us both really deepen both the rigor of our strategic thinking and our emphasis on developing a strong culture for our movement. Many trainings or coaching processes focus on one or the other, but the Momentum cohort process really helped us develop both.”

-Ankur Asthana

”I learned so much about what frontloading is and what frontloading isn't. I learned that there are. so many rabbit holes one can get lost in during frontloading that don't need to be completely figured out before launching, and that there are a few decisions that are absolutely critical to dive into.”

-Elias Newman

”Being in the frontloading cohort not only provided me with the frameworks, research, and lessons to move past that voice and know that our movement wasn’t trusting in me, it was trusting in proven, time-tested, and refined theory and praxis - the cohort also provided me with validation, resonance, and confidence to know that my peers and elders also deal with/dealt with intense imposter syndrome while launching some of the most successful movements of our time. “

-Mia Lei
