You’re invited to apply for the 2023 Momentum Training Cohort!
This year, Momentum is planning to train more leaders than ever before. We’re expanding our offerings to hone organizers’ skills in shifting public opinion, developing leaders, and mobilizing communities across the country. In order to pull it off, we need a strong team of trainers committed to growing and supporting new leaders.
That’s where you come in!
We’ll kick off the 2023 cohort with an in-person Training for Trainers April 19th-23rd. At the T4T, the training team will get what they need to prepare to lead both the virtual Momentum 101 and the in-person Momentum 201.
Learn more about each training:
-
This 3-day virtual training covers the fundamentals of the Momentum model of hybrid organizing. Participants will delve into topics including the different approaches to social change, what history can tell us about our current organizing challenges, what ideology has to do with social movements, the building blocks of hybrid organizing, and strategic leadership.
Join us for Momentum 101 if you are new to Momentum concepts or if you are looking for a refresher on the basics of hybrid organizing. This training is suitable for all experience levels and we highly encourage organizers newly taking on leadership roles to apply.
-
This 3-day, in-person training is for social movement organizers interested in leveling up their strategy and organizing craft. This includes advanced frameworks on the hybrid organizing method, analyzing our political context, and a deeper dive into ideology. This training is designed to prepare participants for new and bold experimentation out in the world.
This training is best suited for team leaders or anyone responsible for developing other leaders. We encourage participants to apply with someone else from their organization!

Frequently Asked Questions
-
In 2021, after over 5 years of movement experimentation, Momentum took a pause to assess our wins and loses, the role of movements, and what Momentum can do to make them even more successful.
Through this process the community identified some hard fought lessons that we would be remiss not to incorporate into our training curriculum. So although the 2023 training curriculum will have core Momentum concepts of trainings past, there has been an in-depth curriculum revamp with new content that meets our current political moment. We believe these changes are critical to supporting the success of today’s social movements.
-
The 2023 Momentum Training Cohort will be no larger than 25 trainers. This is the number of trainers that are needed for the trainings we have slated for this year. In order to grow as trainers there must be training opportunities and we want to make sure that all participants in the cohort have the opportunity to practice and grow their training skills.
-
Those selected to be a part of the 2023 Momentum Training Cohort will be the only trainers equipped to train with Momentum in 2023.
However, there are other support roles that are needed to make a training successful, including small group facilitators and prep coaches which you do not need to be a part of the cohort to hold. You can apply for one of those roles by using the same application linked above and indicating facilitator and/or coach in the roles check box.

Trainers in the 2023 Momentum Training Cohort will be expected to attend the in person Training for Trainers and commit to at least two trainings over the course of 2023. Upon completing the Training for Trainers, participants will be able to sign up for their training teams for the year so that they can plan accordingly. Training for the virtual Momentum 101 as well as the in-person Momentum 201 will be assigned based on experience and availability.
For example, it is possible that one trainer in the cohort only trains at the virtual M101, another trains at both a M101 and M201, and yet another trainer only trains at the in-person M201.
Trainers are expected to participate in the full prep schedule leading up to each training. The prep schedule will be a 6 week lead time to the M101 training and an 8 week lead time to the M201 training.
The following is an example of a prep schedule for a trainer who is training at the June virtual Momentum 101 and the September in person Momentum 201:
April 19-23rd: Attend Training for Trainers
Starting in May the training team will kick off for a 6 week prep schedule for June M101. This will be ~10-12 hours a week for the 6 week period including
Weekly team calls
Training partner prep sessions
Practice Run-Thrus with a coach
Full team run of show
The full training team will be expected at the entire duration of the 3 day virtual training
All trainers will attend at 1 hour debrief
Then come June, the September Momentum 201 training will launch with an 8 week prep schedule of ~10-12 hours a week including:
Weekly team calls
Training partner prep sessions
Practice Run-Thrus with a coach
Full team run of show
Trainers for in-person trainings will get traveled covered to arrive a half a day before participants for training team grounding and final prep
Trainers will participate in a 1 hour virtual debrief after the training is complete
Within the training team there are 3 roles a trainer can hold: lead trainer, assistant lead trainer, and trainer. Each of these roles comes with a different level of responsibility and number of hours a week, and therefore each is compensated at different levels.
Lastly, cohort participants are asked to attend a once a month call for continued connection, skill building and lesson sharing.
-
Trainers will not be solely responsible for training logistics or recruitment. Both will be heavily supported by Momentum staff. However, all trainers are expected to encourage members of their organizations and networks to apply. It’s always more impactful to train when you have your own organizational leaders and members in the room!
Lead trainers and assistant lead trainers will be responsible for coordinating with Momentum staff on logistics and recruitment.
-
Cohort participants will be compensated with a flat-rate stipend each time they train over the course of 2023. Compensation will vary based on training and role and will fall between $1,500-$3,000
Facilitators and coaches will also be compensated with flat-rate stipends for each training with rates falling between $150-$500.
-
Attending the Training for Trainers from April 19th-23rd is a requirement for all 2023 cohort participants.
Facilitators and coaches will receive an orientation to their roles but will not be attending the Training for Trainer.
-
We ask that if possible those selected cover their travel to the Training for Trainers. Full travel scholarships are also available.
We ask that in lieu of tuition, each trainer in the cohort participates in our end-of-year fundraiser by fundraising in their networks to help cover the cost of the program.
-
The number of trainers that we are selecting to participate in the cohort is limited. However, there are other roles including small group facilitator, prep coach, and tech leads. Those that apply for a training role may be offered another role as part of the training program.
If you’re interested in applying to be small group facilitator or prep coach, you can apply here and indicate that on your application. The application deadline is February 28th, 2023.
